DMA and PTFM Announce Marketing and Licensing Agreement;

The Solution to a $2 Billion Capital Drain for Law Firms
04.19.05, 9:28 AM ET

Disbursement Management Associates, LLC (DMA) of Boston (www.dmalaw.com) and Patent & Trademark Fee Management, LLC (PTFM) of Minneapolis (www.ptfmco.com) today announced that they had entered into a cross-marketing and licensing agreement aimed at returning to law firms the more than $2 billion they have tied up financing out-of-pocket disbursements on behalf of their clients. PTFM has successfully addressed this issue for intellectual property "boutique" law firms for several years, and this agreement grants DMA an exclusive worldwide license to PTFM's portfolio of issued and pending patents covering this area.

Marilyn Chenault Minot, CEO of DMA, stated, "Our new Disbursement Manager(TM) product is aimed at larger, general practice law firms. The pressure on large law firms today is to improve the use of their partners' capital, cash flow and client service. Implementing the DMA solution would return an average of approximately $15 million in capital to each of the country's top 100 law firms, and eliminate the cost of carrying out-of-pocket disbursements on behalf of their clients. PTFM's patent portfolio gives us a tremendous advantage in this area - so far as we know, we are the only two companies that have identified, much less solved, this major problem for law firms and other service providers."

Steve Lundberg, CEO of PTFM, stated, "We are very excited to have this strategic alliance with DMA and to be able to add the DMA product to our portfolio. While intellectual property firms have the most serious issues with hard disbursements (since these average 28% of their lawyers' charges), this unproductive use of partners' capital is of increasing importance to the larger general practice firms as they expand more into intellectual property practice. The intellectual property firms that have implemented the PTFM product have found it to be universally acceptable to their clients, who understand the cost of money and realize that their law firm cannot continue acting as a free bank."

The DMA solution has been endorsed by the Boston Bar Association. Currently, the DMA software is fully integrated with Thomson Elite's financial management software which is used by 61 of the AmLaw 100 firms, and is easily adaptable to cover other platforms.
